If, instead of alternatives in a closed question "Yes" and "no" to put other alternatives like "this is the main reason", "this is not the main reason", "it is not the cause of dismissal" that you love to do sociology, and you have the same table question.
This kind of question of the second type contains a series of private, additional questions as well of the second type, each of which needs to be translated by the Respondent into a series of dichotomous questions. In other words, the Respondent is asked a Herculean task in three stages to find the correct answer. This means it is necessary to build 12 dichotomous questions like "is the main reason low salary" ("Yes", "no"), "is low wages are not the main reason for leaving" ("Yes", "no"), "low pay is not the reason for the departure" ("Yes", "no"). That's why the table questions do not work, what more will be said further.
The researcher has another opportunity to complicate the work of the Respondent, suggesting that the question of the second type without alternatives, giving him the ability to determine the context and content of the question. I mean an open-ended question.
Thus, in sociological surveys, we have a question of the first type, or a dichotomous question, and three variations of the question of the second type, outdoor, indoor and table (combined) question that somehow, but reduced to the first type of question.
In principle, if we admit for question-answering relations in sociological research the status of a special artificial language with the formal interpretation of the right types of questions, the variations of the second type of questions have the unconditional right to exist. The only thing that requires a good knowledge of the sociologist, what the objective reality reflects both the form and their variations. Experimental studies show that depending on the shape issue significantly change the results of the study.
The table below summarizes the responses to the same content, but presented in different forms, the question.
