What do these facts prove? They clearly prove
what species Wallis separated layers with more than twenty thousand
feet thickness, and, therefore, belong apparently to the period
considerably distant from each other, in fact, lived at the same time.
They prove that the mollusks and sea lilies, which was considered until now
exceptionally belonging to the most ancient Silurian formations, and
assumed extinct long before that time, when the shellfish
and sea lilies of the later Silurian strata, in fact
there was at one time with the last one, and can very easily be that
the latest appeared in as early a period as the first. They prove,
not just mineral properties of sedimentary formations, but the meeting
organic species contained in them is largely dependent on
local conditions, It proves that fossils fall into what
whatsoever group strata cannot be taken for
species of flora or fauna is exclusively of the period to which they
belong. In short, these facts throw a strong doubt on many
geological generalizations.
But despite a number of such facts and directly expressed
the view that the evidence of organic remains is to be trusted in this
with respect to "with the same restrictions as the testimony of the mineral
signs", sir Charles Lyell makes a positive conclusion on the basis of
this evidence, he makes them even where the number of common minerals
types slightly, and the distance of the area great. Having settled that in various
areas Europe a distinguishing feature of the Eocene strata are
nummulite, he concludes, without citing in support of his opinion no
further evidence that wherever there nummulite, whether in
Morocco, in Algeria, in Egypt, in Persia, in Sindh, in the Heap, in East Bengal
or on the borders of China, the formation containing them, must belong to
middle Eocene system.
