Guess from where comes Mr. Mac McLennan, that the worship of fetishes preceded the cult of anthropomorphic gods may be recognized me only partly. It is true in a sense but not completely. If the words "gods" and "cult" to take in their ordinary specific value, then suggested - rightly; but if you extend the meaning of these words to include the initial vague idea, of which developed certain ideas about the gods and about the cult, I believe this assumption is incorrect. The original form of all religion is propitiation of deceased ancestors, which are supposed to be still existing and capable of causing good or evil to their descendants. Podgotovljat to further the study of the principles of sociology, I have several years ago thoroughly investigated the notions, common among the simplest human societies, and observations of various kinds over various uncivilized tribes made me come to the conclusion, consistent with what was recently expressed in this journal by Professor Huxley, namely: "Savage, imagining that the body is abandoned living in it active substance, suggests that the active substance it never ceases still live; the feelings and thoughts that arise savage about this, and form the basis of his superstitions.
